Materials & Prop 65
Last updated November 6, 2026
What each KEEL product is made of, as far as we can describe it today, what we are still checking, the claims we do not make and why, and California's Proposition 65. How to fit, use and care for each product is on our Fit & Safety page.
On this page
Where things stand
- Materials: until the maker confirms them in writing, we describe only what can be seen on the product: coated webbing, metal hardware, silicone, plastic film. The table below lists them, product by product, with what is still being confirmed.
- Our checks: we are collecting, from the maker, written confirmation of the materials of each product, and lab reports for our own units, not for similar products sold by others.
- Proposition 65: no warning is shown today. We do not have lab results for our units yet; if they show that a warning is required, we will add it.
- Country of origin: every product is imported. Its country of origin is to be marked on the product or its packaging, and we are confirming the country and the marking with the maker.
- Orders: the shop does not take orders yet. As the maker's documents arrive, this page and the product pages show what they confirm.
What each product is made of
The middle column is what can be seen on the product today. The third column is what we are collecting in writing from the maker. Once we have it, we publish it on the product page and on this page.
| Product | What we can describe today | Being confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Corgi Harness, Dachshund Harness, Frenchie Harness, Everyday Harness (the same harness) | A padded harness: a padded fabric chest panel and back panel, webbing straps with sliders and side-release buckles, and metal D-rings. | The fibers of the outer fabric, the padding and the webbing; the material of the buckles and the sliders; the metal and the finish of the D-rings; the number of rings; the weight of each size. |
| Leash | A strap of coated webbing, with a metal snap hook. | The plastic of the coating and the fiber of the webbing under it; how the ends are fixed; the metal and the finish of the snap hook; whether there is a small ring near the handle; length and width. |
| Collar | A strap of coated webbing, with a metal pin buckle and a keeper loop. | The plastic of the coating and the fiber of the webbing under it; the metal and the finish of the buckle; the neck range and the width; whether there is a ring for an ID tag. |
| Bag Holder | A silicone capsule with a cord loop and a slide stopper. | That the capsule is silicone, and its grade; the material of the cord and the stopper; how it opens; the size of roll it takes. |
| Poop Bags | Navy bags of plastic film, on rolls. | Which plastic the film is; the material of the roll cores; bag size and thickness; whether the bags have any scent. |
Each piece takes its color in its own material, the fabric, the webbing, its coating or the silicone, so the harness, the leash, the collar and the Bag Holder of one color can differ slightly in shade, and one production batch can differ slightly from the next.
When we name a fiber, we will use its generic name, as the maker confirms it in writing, never a trademark.
Our checks and what is still pending
| What we are collecting | Status |
|---|---|
| The maker's written description of the materials and the construction of each product | Being collected |
| Lab reports for units of our own products, for the chemicals listed under California Proposition 65, in the coated webbing, the plastic and metal parts, the silicone and the dyes | Being collected |
| The maker's written statement of what the fabric, the webbing and its coating contain, for the state laws on chemicals in consumer products that may apply to them | Being collected |
| The country of origin of each product, and how it is marked on the product or its packaging | Being collected |
| Plain packaging, with no recycling symbol and no environmental claim | Being requested from the maker |
| Lengths, widths, weights, the collar's neck range and the bag size | Being collected |
We publish a result only once we have it in writing, for our own units. We do not borrow another seller's documents, and we never describe a product as having passed a check that is still pending.
Claims we do not make
Some words are common on dog gear. We do not use them on this website, and we are asking the maker to ship our products in plain packaging without them. Here is why, in plain words.
- "Waterproof": the coated webbing of the Leash and the Collar wipes clean with a damp cloth, and that is what we say. We have no test that shows how any of our products behaves in water over time, so we do not call any of them waterproof.
- "Chew-proof": no harness, leash, collar or bag holder stands up to a dog's teeth for long. None of our products is made to be chewed, and we never say otherwise. If your dog chews one, take it away: see Chewing and swallowed parts.
- "Biodegradable" and "compostable": our Poop Bags are plastic. California law (Public Resources Code section 42357) does not allow a plastic product to be sold labeled "biodegradable", or with a similar word that suggests it breaks down in a landfill or in nature, and it allows "compostable" only for plastic that meets specific standards and is certified. Some other states have similar rules, and the Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides ask for solid scientific proof before any claim of this kind. Our bags have no such certification, so we never call them biodegradable or compostable. Used dog waste bags belong in a trash can in any case: see Disposal.
- "Eco" and other broad environmental words: words like these promise a general benefit to the environment that no one can prove for a product as a whole. The Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides advise against such broad claims, and we make none.
- Recycling symbols: California law (SB 343) allows the chasing-arrows symbol, and other recycling claims on a product or its packaging, only for materials that meet the state's criteria. We are asking the maker to ship our products in plain packaging, with no recycling symbol and no environmental claim.
- "Free of" claims: we make no claim that a product is "free" of a chemical or of a group of chemicals.
California Proposition 65
California's Proposition 65 requires a clear and reasonable warning before a business exposes people in California to a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, above the levels the law sets. On dog gear, the usual places to look are coated webbing, plastic and metal parts, and dyes, and that is what we are asking the maker's lab reports to cover.
No Proposition 65 warning is shown on our pages today. We do not have lab results for our units yet: we are collecting them from the maker. If a report shows that a warning is required for a product, we will add it to that product's page, where you see it before you buy, to this page, and to the product or its packaging, before that product is sold for delivery to California.
Country of origin
All our products are imported. US customs rules (19 CFR Part 134) require each imported product, or its packaging, to be marked with the country where it was made. We are confirming the country of each product, and its marking, with the maker, and we will tell you on request. We make no claim that any of our products is of US origin.
Asking for the documents
You can ask us for what we have received for any product: the maker's written description of its materials and the lab report for our units, once we have them. E-mail contact@keeldogs.com with "Materials" in the subject line and the name of the product. We reply within 2 business days, send you what we can share, and tell you plainly what is still pending.
If something on this website does not match the product you received, or you see a claim you think we should not make, please tell us too. We correct it.
